About the PGY-1 Veterinary Pharmacy Residency
The College of Veterinary Medicine and School of Pharmacy at Texas A&M University in College Station, TX are offering a one-year residency program in Veterinary Clinical Pharmacy Practice. The Veterinary Pharmacy Resident will obtain postdoctoral training in veterinary clinical pharmacy and therapeutics. The resident will build a working knowledge and skill set, design and conduct a clinical research project and develop leadership, teaching and practice management skills. The resident will provide pharmacy services to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital in both the Large and Small Animal Hospitals. These services will encompass duties in the pharmacy and the clinic floors. The resident will also complete an Academic Training Program conducted in coordination with the Texas A&M University Irma Lerma Rangel School of Pharmacy.

The resident should have a strong knowledge of medications and problem solving skills, ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others, dedicated, ability to work independently, proficient in pharmacy calculations, aseptic technique, ability and desire to teach. The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital Pharmacy is not a licensed Pharmacy and so a Texas Pharmacy license is not required. The program is divided longitudinally into different areas: pharmacy operations (20%), clinical pharmacy (45%), teaching(20%), research (10%), and other(5%).
Pharmacy operations will include non-sterile and sterile compounding, drug therapy problem resolution and drug information services. The resident will spend much of their time rotating with the clinical specialty services of the hospitals. The required rotations are: Small and Large Internal Medicine, Food Animal Medicine and Surgery, ER/ ICU, Dermatology, Anesthesia and Surgery, Oncology, Cardiology, and Primary Care. The teaching aspect will include 2VM and 3VM classes throughout the year, pharmacy and veterinary student mentorship and staff development. The research will be based on the residents interest with a variety of tools to pull from in both the College of Pharmacy and College of Veterinary Medicine. Lastly, the resident will spend time with Hospital Administration and Infection Control to fulfill the practice management objectives.
At the completion of the residency, the resident will be eligible for certification by the Society of Veterinary Hospital Pharmacists (SVHP) as a Diplomate of the International College of Veterinary Pharmacy.
